The M on the camera screen is manual setting.

The number 50 is the shutter speed (this is the speed in which the shutter is opening and closing in the process of taking the photograph). You can change the shutter speed by turning the wheel.
F2.8 is the F-stop or Aperture; this is like the camera eye, this being the pinhole for the camera where light is let in. Therefore if you want to take a photo of the moon at night, you would need to let a lot of light in so you would increase the Aperture.
The lines that divide the screen into 9 sections are the lines that divide it up into the rule of thirds.
